2018 Bloomington Hoops – Week 5 (Mar. 04)

The talent in the Bloomington Hoops league once again shined in Week 5. We had multiple 20-point scorers and the top teams in the Power Rankings continue to impress. Both of our undefeated teams, Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) and Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) remained unbeaten and both will do so for at least four more Sundays as we go on a month-long break. We have four teams all sitting at 3-2 and tied for the #3 overall seed, while we also have three teams sitting at 2-3 that are all tied for the #7 overall seed. When we return to the court on Sunday, April 8th we will wrap up our regular season schedule to determine our final Playoff seeds!

Power Rankings

1. Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) – 5-0

Team Delta Chi JR continued their incredible start to the 2018 season on Sunday evening. They got to 5-0 by rolling over Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) 82-42. Dyer was the leagues and teams leading scorer on the night, dropping 24 massive points to lead his guys to a comfortable victory. Luke Hallett had a solid night putting up 17 points while Captain Noah continued his strong season by scoring 16. They are going to head into the month-long break feeling great. As they should as the #1 team in the Power Rankings! This win also guarantees Team Delta Chi JR a Top-2 seed in the upcoming Playoffs. They’ll now have four weeks to prepare for an 0-5 Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) squad that will be looking to come out of the break and record their first victory on the season before heading into the Playoffs.

 

2. Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) – 5-0

Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) forfeited to Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) on Sunday evening as they did not have enough available bodies to field a legal team. It was their easiest W of the season and that is really saying something. Are they scaring teams away at this point?! The win makes it five in a row to begin the 2018 season and they will now head into the month-long break without a blemish on their record. The win also guarantees Team Delts JR a Top-2 seed in the upcoming playoffs. When we return to the court on Sunday, April 8th, Team Delts JR will seek to remain undefeated before heading into the Playoffs with a very important match-up against Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) (3-2-0).

 

3. Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) – 3-2

Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) have been three steps forward, two steps backward so far this season. The underdog, Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) upset the favored Team Evans Scholar on Sunday night by a final score of 93-83 in an offensive explosion by both teams. Despite the loss, Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) really played their A game on the offensive end in this game, beating their average of 70.6 points per game this season. All five starters were able to get in double digit figures in this one, led by Llogan Russell who put in 20 points for Team Evans Scholar SO. Next up for Team Evans Scholar SO when we return from break on Sunday, April 8th is a matchup against Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) (1-4-0), as they look to rebound from this disappointing loss and hang onto the #3 spot.

 

4. Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) – 3-2

On Sunday evening the underdog, Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel), beat the favored Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) by a final score of 63 to 56. Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) really were unable to get rolling on offense in this one, scoring less than their average of 67.2 points per game for the year. Jack Barmasse had 19 points for Team Sammy SR and Captain Jack O Keefe continued his fantastic season scoring 13. Unfortunately for Team Sammy SR, the loss brings their record to 3-2 but on the bright side, still hang onto the #4 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings. Next up for Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) when we return from our month-long break is a showdown versus undefeated Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) (5-0-0), as they attempt to bounce back and finish the regular season strong.

 

5. Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) – 3-2

Two weeks ago, these guys were not even ranked. They now are sitting pretty in the #5 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings! Team ZBT SR and Captain Matt Siegel blew out Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy). With a score of 79-52, Team ZBT SR picked up their second consecutive victory and moves their overall record above .500 for the first time this season to 3-2. They really brought their A game in this one, beating their points per game average of 62.6. Cam Clearfield was the star of this game and the club’s offense with 17 points. Brett Kornfeld had his second consecutive double digit scoring performance, dropping 13 points. Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) (2-3-0) are next up on the schedule for Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) when we return to the court on Sunday, April 8th as they look to keep their winning momentum going.

 

6. Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) – 3-2

Moving up one spot to #6 in the Week 5 Power Rankings is Team Kappa Sig JR, led by Captain Ryan Brennan. Team Kappa Sig JR earned a very important win on Sunday night by the final score of 61-53 over Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard). Christopher Casaburo had a nice game to help get the club into the winner’s circle with 18 points. Floor general Ryan Brennan also had a very solid night, posting 9 big points to help lead his squad to their third victory on the season. Next up for Captain Ryan Brennan and company when we return from break on Sunday, April 8th is a throw down versus Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) (2-3-0).

 

7. Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) – 2-3

Not many people were giving Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) a chance heading into Sunday night, but they proved all the haters wrong as they upset the favored Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) by a final score of 93 to 83. The win brings their record up to 2-3 before we head into the month-long break. That will leave this squad feeling good with the next four Sundays off. They stepped up big in this win, exceeding their points per game average of 72.4. Garrett Mullen and Brenda Sernick had outstanding performances on Sunday night to help earn the crew the win with both chipping in 19 points. Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) (3-2-0) are next up on the calendar for Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) on Sunday, April 8th as they look to keep their winning ways rolling.

 

8. Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) – 2-3

After winning a couple games in a row to hop up into the #5 spot a week ago, they take the biggest fall in the Week #5 Power Rankings, moving down to the #8 spot. By the final score of 61-53, Team Kappa Sig JR lost a crucial game and our Week 5 Game of the Week to housemates Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan). They hung with them but couldn’t get enough buckets late to make a run and over take them. Deborah Bergwall had 14 points for Team Kappa Sig JR while Captain Luke did what he has done all season, dropping 14 impressive points to keep his squad in this game. Next up for Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) when we return from our four-week break, is a battle versus struggling Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) (1-4-0), as they look to rebound and move back up in our Power Rankings.

 

9. Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) – 2-3

The underdog, Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) upset the favored Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe), 63 to 56 on Sunday night to move back up into the #9 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings. By the final count of 63-56, Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) got a very respectable and important W to bring their record back up to 2-3. This team really brought it in this one, besting their points per game average of 50.2. Captain Brandon Barthel had a very nice game to lead the team’s Offense with 22 points. The 22 points brings Captain Brandon’s season average up to 15 PPG. Next up for Team Delts SO and Captain Brandon on Sunday, April 8th when we get back from our month-long break, is a match-up versus Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) (3-2-0). Extremely important match-up for both crews coming up next month!

 

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) – 0-5

Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) really struggled to get anything going on Sunday night as they took a crushing defeat to Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) by the final score of 79-52. Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) were unable to get rolling in this game, especially on the offensive end, scoring less than their average of 57.8 PPG this season. Jake Kreppel led the squad on Sunday night as he had 13 points for Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy). On Sunday, April 8th when we return from our four-week break, Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) will attempt to get off the schneid versus undefeated and #1 Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) (5-0-0). A win against these guys can completely turn their season around. They have four weeks to come up with a great game-plan!

 

Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) – 1-4

Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) crushed Team Delts SR and Captain Matt Braschi on Sunday night by a final score of 82-42. Team Delts SR really didn’t have their best stuff in this game and it showed, scoring less than their average of 51.0 points per game for the season. The leading scorer for Team Delts SR was none other than Captain Matt who went for 11 points. Unfortunately for Team Delts SR, they just could not find much offensive production from anyone else to keep this game close. Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) (2-3-0) are next up on the calendar for Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) when we return to the courts on Sunday, April 8th as they try to bounce back from this lopsided loss and gain some momentum prior to the Playoffs starting.

 

Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) – 1-4

As soon as we thought this squad may have turned the corner, they struggled to get bodies together once again and had to take another loss on Sunday night, forfeiting to #2 Team Delts JR (Grant Miller). The loss pushes their record to 1-4 on the campaign. Team ZBT SO and Captain Blake Weltman will now have four full weeks to fix these issues and try to come together as a team, as they try to get a win on Sunday, April 8th versus Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) (3-2-0) who are next up on the schedule.
