Power Rankings

1. Team Holzman – 1-0

It’s been a little over 30 weeks since Team Holzman has taken the field but on Sunday afternoon they put on their cleats and began the quest for their 3rd straight title run. They started right where they left off back on October 1st… on top. Can anyone stop the defending back-to-back Champs? Team Holzman started their season in style on Sunday afternoon as Anthony Maione made a couple of great web gems in the field to help his squad grab a 10-3 Opening Day victory over All Sports Series 16’’ softball newcomers, Team Russell. Captain Andrew was lights out on the mound as he only gave up 3 runs while striking out 4 batters. Alec Permach took care of business at the plate, going 3-4 with 5 RBI’s on the afternoon. Alec was also the first batter to be affected by the 2018 Home Run Rule Change as he was the first batter this season to hit one over the yellow line at Walter Payton HS that was NOT ruled a home run. In 2018, the ball must clear the entire fence to be deemed a HR. The rule change did not seem to affect #1 Team Holzman or Alec in any way however on Sunday as he ended up cracking one completely over the fence anyways.

2. Team Maione – 2-0

Team Maione entered the 2017 postseason with an undefeated record but were unfortunately unable to walk away with the 2017 crown. They began their 2018 Chicago 16’’ Softball campaign against the team that lost in last year’s Championship Game, Team Rhum. In what ended up being our Week 1 Game of the Week, Team Maione got a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 7th from Austin Natkin to start their 2018 season on a fantastic note. Team Maione had an opportunity to close the door on Team Rhum in the top half of the 7th but gave up the tying run which forced them to close it out in the bottom half of the seventh. Tyler Max and Captain Frank Maione led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Austin Natkin knocked in the winning run. In their second game of their scheduled double header on Sunday afternoon, Team Maione carried that opening game victory momentum and slaughtered newcomers Team Tap Dat by a whopping 30-1 final score. Geoffrey Perlman pitched a 1-run gem while the Offense put up 20 runs in a single inning! They also had 4 different guys blast HRs in their two games. These guys are going to be tough to beat if they keep putting up that type of production!

3. Team Lessem – 1-0

Coming in at the #3 hole after a very impressive 15-5 Opening Day victory is Team Lessem who is led by their veteran Captain Zach Lessem. They got some outstanding pitching on the mound in the season opener and got some outstanding defensive plays from Alexander Brown to secure their first victory of the 2018 season. Scoring was also a non-issue for Team Lessem in the early going. They put up 15 runs on a very solid Team Shapiro squad which was only behind Team Maione’s 30 run performance in Week 1. Aric Menn and Jordan Schwartz led the way with the bats, knocking in 4 runs apiece. Brandon Coan and Samuel Mendelson were also able to knock in 2 runs of their own. With a lineup that is this productive and talented from top to bottom, Team Lessem will be in contention all season long. Team Lessem will look to continue their strong start in Week 2 once we return from Mother’s Day break against #1 and defending Champions, Team Holzman.

4. Team Rhum – 0-1

The Runners-Up in the 2017 edition of the Chicago 16’’ Softball league, Team Rhum, come in at the #4 spot in the Week 1 Power Rankings with a very tough 10-9 loss to #2 Team Maione on Opening Day. Down a couple of runs going into the top half of the 7th, Robby Feldman doubled in a run before the tying run crossing the plate on a sacrifice. Unfortunately for Team Rhum, they could not hold down Team Maione in the bottom half of the inning and end up taking their first loss on the season. In 2017 Team Maione finished with 2 guys in the Top-10 for batting on the season, Captain Adam Rhum and Zack Pearlstein. Zach started his 2018 campaign right where he left off in 2017, going 3-4 with an RBI and a couple of runs scored on Opening Day. Andrew Picchietti also had a fantastic Opening Day, finishing 2-3 at the plate with 3 runs batted in. These guys are now a veteran group and will be doing everything in their power to get back to the Championship Game in 2018. This roster can win it all and will be in the Top-3 before you know it.

5. Team Russell – 0-1

New to the Chicago 16’’ Softball League, Team Russell came out on Opening Day and gave our defending back-to-back Champions a run for their money. By a final score of 10-3, Team Russell lost a good battle to #1 Team Holzman and take their first ever Chicago 16’’ Softball League defeat. Outside of Zach Pearlstein’s 3-4, 1 RBI and a couple of runs scored performance and Lowell Hall’s 2 RBI’s, Team Russell’s offense did not inspire much confidence on Opening Day. That said, allowing the defending champions and one of the most dangerous lineups in the league to 10 runs is certainly not something they their hang their heads on. As Team Russell will soon find out, they cannot let a defeat sink their confidence as the schedule never gets any easier in an All Sports Series league. They’ll need to put this loss in the rear-view mirror quickly and turn their attention to their next opponent in Week 2, #2 Team Maione. If these guys can muster up a few more solid innings on offense and combine that with their fantastic defensive efforts (like the great web gem they got out of Peter McGuire), these guys will start winning games and cement themselves as true contenders.

6. Team Shapiro- 0-1

Team Shapiro is returning in 2018 for their 3rd straight Chicago 16’’ Softball League appearance. Last year they played their first season as Team Shapiro as Captain Joey Shapiro has assumed the reigns and will now lead his squad for a second consecutive season. Unfortunately for Joey and the rest of his squad, they went down on Opening Day by a final score of 15-5 to Team Lessem. Team Shapiro struggled offensively out of the gate, but a couple of highlights were Ross Miller’s 2-2, 1 RBI and 1 run scored performance and Captain Joey’s 2 RBI. If they can find a way to start faster, they will be just fine. They entered the 2017 postseason as the overall #8 seed and will look to build on that performance in 2018. #4 Team Rhum awaits in Week 2 once we return from Mother’s Day break.

7. Team Tap Dat – 0-1

Captain Jim Dowell leads this group into their first ever All Sports Series Summer Chicago 16’’ Softball League appearance. This group has a bunch of talent but ran into a tough and momentum filled Team Maione crew on Sunday afternoon on Opening Day. Going down by a lopsided score of 30-1, Team Tap Dat suffered a very tough defeat and will look to get this one behind them as fast as they can. It was all about one specific inning in this game when they gave up an enormous 20 runs in one single inning. Any time you have an inning like that go against you, it is almost impossible to turn it around. Everyone had a bit of rust to knock off too with the bats in Week 1 and you can expect them all to get much better going forward. Their offense is at or near the bottom of the league in OBP and power after 1 week of play, however the good news for Team Dap Dat is that they still have 10 more regular season games to turn that all around. They’ll look to put this loss behind them and get back to the .500 mark in Week 2.

That’s it for Week 1. Excited for the 2018 Season! See you on May 20th!
