Updated: June 29, 2018

We were FINALLY able to get in the 2nd week of Games on Sunday afternoon. Between Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and the unfortunate weather in between, it seems as if we have been off forever! It was about a month and a half in-between Weeks 1 and 2 but we should be able to start getting into a nice rhythm moving forward here. We ended up with a location change on Sunday afternoon and with the new location came lower scoring games compared to Week 1. Week 2 produced a couple of tight games with Team Rhum squeezing by Team Russell. We also saw #1 Team Holzman sweep a Double Header to jump up to 3-0 in the Standings and now sit tied at the top with Team Maione (for at least a week).. All of this and more in the Rankings below!

We are back at Walter Payton HS for Week 3 (July 1st).

Power Rankings

1. Team Holzman – 3-0

As mentioned at the top, Team Holzman was able to sweep their double header on Sunday afternoon and have kept their place atop the Week 2 Power Rankings. In the first game of their double dip on Sunday, Team Holzman was able to walk away with a solid 5-1 victory over All Sports Series newcomers, Team Tap Dat. 5 different players were able to knock in a run to round off their scoring and Captain Holzman turned a beautiful double play in the top half of the 5th to prevent a rally from Team Tap Dat. In the top half of the 7th, Anthony AKA “Tony” Maione had a fantastic web gem to end the game and crush Team Tap Dat’s hopes and dreams of getting their first win of the season. In the second game of their double dip, Team Holzman needed an extra inning to secure their 3rd overall victory on the season, beating Team Lessem by a final score of 6-5. Seth Davis knocked in Jeff Statmo for the winning run in the bottom half of the 8th to give them the dramatic walk-off win. It was good karma for Team Holzman since they were giving Team Lessem a catcher even though they had 9 players in attendance. These guys looked determined to go the whole way once again this year. Team Holzman takes on Team Rhum in Week 3 on Sunday afternoon back at Walter Payton HS.

2. Team Maione – 3-0

Team Maione stays in the #2 hole in the Week 2 Power Rankings after a very solid 10-1 victory over Team Shapiro on Sunday afternoon at the UIC Flames Field. The Clinchers were flying off their bats on Sunday as they had 7 different players knock in a run with Austin Natkin, Cody Pantle and Frank Maione all knocking in 2 each. These guys have more pop in their line-up than any other squad in the League and you must really pitch well to keep their Offense off the base-paths. They also can play the field as well as anyone as evident with Frank Maione’s 4th inning web gem and a nifty Double Play to end the inning and any sort of rally that Team Shapiro was hoping to mount. They take the field at Walter Payton HS on Sunday afternoon against an 0-2 Team Russell squad that will be looking to notch their first victory of the 2018 Summer season.

3. Team Rhum – 1-1

Picking up their first W of the Season on Sunday was Team Rhum with a very nice 12-10 victory over Team Russell. Because of this very big week 2 victory, they move up into the #3 spot in the Week 2 Power Rankings. Andy Pollack led the charge with the bats for Team Rhum on Sunday afternoon going 4-5 while knocking in 3 of the teams 12 total runs. Captain Adam had 2 hits to go along with his 2 RBI’s, while Alec Wise, Alex Rosenberg, Tyler Goldstein and Jacob Silverman all had 2 RBI’s of their own. These guys can hit up and down the line-up and they are going to be fun to watch as the season gets going. These guys also know how to use their gloves as a 6th inning Jeremy Rosenfeld web gem might have saved the game going forward. They take on #1 Team Holzman and #5 Team Shapiro on Sunday afternoon at Walter Payton HS in their Double Header day.

4. Team Lessem – 1-1

Team Lessem suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of #1 Team Holzman on Sunday afternoon at the UIC Flames Field, dropping the closest game of the day in extra innings by a final score of 7-6. They just could not hold down Team Holzman in the bottom half of the 8th as Team Holzman knocked in the winning run with nobody covering home. Having only 9 active players for this one last Sunday ended up being the difference in the end. This is a good squad though and they are going to win more than they lose this Summer. Alexander Brown went 3 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBI’s for them while Brett Winger knocked in 2 runs of his own. They will head into Week 3 with a matchup against a winless Team Tap Dat squad that will be looking to get on the winning track.

5. Team Russell – 0-2

Team Russell left their second game of the season still searching for their first Win on the year. They fell 12-10 to #3 Team Rhum. Shout out to Dale Zigulich who made his way to the UIC Flames Field all gassed up but still put up a 3-4, 2 RBI performance. Impressive to say the least. Dillon Murphy, Peter McGuire and Emmett all drove in 2 runs of their own, they just could not hold down the heavy hitting bats of Team Rhum. They just couldn’t get out of a couple of innings and that was their downfall. These guys are going to be just fine however. They have power all over their lineup and can also make nice plays in the field at any given time. They get back into action on Sunday afternoon at Walter Payton HS with a date against #2 and undefeated Team Maione. A win here can skyrocket them back up in the Power Rankings while a third consecutive loss can see them drop to the bottom. Huge week coming up.

6. Team Shapiro- 0-2

Team Shapiro did not see a whole lot of improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 on Sunday afternoon but nonetheless battled the entire game. They didn’t come away with the Win and were only able to muster up 1 run while giving up 10 to #2 Team Maione, but this game was a lot closer than what the outcome indicated. Captain Joey knocked in the only run for Team Shapiro on Sunday afternoon as these guys are now averaging just 3 RPG through the first 2 weeks. They also gave up double digit runs for a second consecutive week but had some nice moments out in the field. None was better than Ben Pineless’s 5th inning spectacular snag at 3rd, which would have been the play of the game, but Captain Joey dropped the ball at first to let the runner get on base. If they can shore up some of these defensive miscues, they are going to give lots of squad’s issues come later in the season. Coming up this Sunday at Walter Payton HS, Team Shapiro takes on #3 Team Rhum as they will be looking to pick up their first W on the season.

7. Team Tap Dat – 0-1

Team Tap Dat took the field for the second time this Season this past Sunday looking for their first ever All Sports Series Men’s 16’’ Softball victory. They didn’t see the results they hoped for as they came across the defending back-to-back Champs in #1 Team Holzman. By the final count of 5-1, Team Tap Dat gave the defending Champs all they could handle but ultimately came up just shy from picking up a huge upset victory. Team Tap Dat left UIC Flames Field this past Sunday without the W but you can tell that the rust really fell off since their Week 1 29-run defeat. This squad is going to be just fine moving forward but will need to wake up their bats as they are averaging just 1 run per game through the first 2 weeks of the season. They had plenty of opportunities to shock the league on Sunday and take down #1 Team Holzman, they just kept falling short in the end. They had a very big opportunity in the 7th inning to mount a nice comeback but a spectacular play in the field by Team Holzman crushed these guys’ hopes and dreams. They take on #4 Team Lessem coming up on Sunday afternoon at Walter Payton HS and will be looking to pick up that important first victory of the season.

That’s it for the 2nd Sunday of the Season. We are back at Walter Payton HS for Week 3.
