Updated: July 6, 2018

On the first Sunday in July and with the temperature almost reaching 100 degrees, we were finally able to play on Back-to-Back Sundays and you could tell that hitters are finally getting into the groove and heat up along with the temperature. Runs were way up this week compared to Week 2. We also saw all four of the scheduled games on Sunday afternoon being won by at least 10 runs. As we exit the 3rd Sunday of actual games, we have just 2 Undefeated Teams remaining… Team Maione and Team Holzman both sit at 4-0. We have two squads that are just two games back of the leaders in the Win column with a ton of games still left this Summer. Meanwhile, three other squads are still searching for their first W on the 2018 Summer season. All of this and more below in the Week 3 Power Rankings!

Power Rankings

1. Team Holzman – 4-0

Holding down the #1 spot for the third consecutive week to start our 2018 season is non-other than the defending Champs, Team Holzman. By a final score of 14-4, Team Holzman cruised past Team Rhum on Sunday afternoon and remain unbeaten to start their 2018 Summer campaign. Zach Fine had a monster day going 5-5 with 3 RBI’s and 2 Runs Scored to help lead his squad over a very good Team Rhum crew. Alec Permach added to his team’s leading RBI total, knocking in 1 to raise his season total to 7. The Defending Back-to-Back Champs are one of the highest scoring teams in the league right now and are tied for averaging the best Runs Against. That’s a recipe for winning if you ask me. Coming up this Sunday at Walter Payton HS they will have an opportunity to take their record to 5-0 when they square off against a Team Shapiro squad that will be looking to do whatever it takes to score their first victory on the 2018 Summer season.

2. Team Maione – 4-0

Team Maione is tied for 1st in the Standings through the first 3 weeks of the regular season as they have jumped out to a 4-0 start to the 2018 Summer season. They have been absolutely murdering the ball, averaging almost 16 runs per game through the first 4 games. Austin Natkin clubbed another Home Run on Sunday afternoon in his clubs 13-3 victory over Team Russell and has now taken the HR race lead over Teammates Captain Frank Maione and Tyler Max. Speaking of Captain Frank, he knocked in 4 more runs on Sunday afternoon to take his league leading RBI total up to 14 RBI. Oh, and did I mention…he has gone 16 for 17 and is batting .941 to start the season. No biggie. Not only is Team Maione leading the league with almost 16 RPG, they are also tied with Team Holzman for the best Runs Against average in the league. These guys are going to be extremely tough to slow down and beat. Week 4 of the regular season coming up on Sunday afternoon at Walter Payton HS will see Team Maione battle against #3 Team Lessem in our Week 4 Game of the Week!

3. Team Lessem – 2-1

Team Lessem got to 2-1 on Sunday afternoon and move up into the #3 spot in the Week 3 Power Rankings. They took down and shutout Team Tap Dat 13-0 and were extremely impressive in doing so. This squad continues to pitch well and set the tempo for their defense as they are now allowing just 4 Runs Per Game through their first 3 games. Joshua Lipnick had a career day at the dish on Sunday as he went 3-3 with 4 RBI and 2 Runs Scored. Alexander Brown, Brett Winger and Feldy all knocked in 2 Runs of their own to help Team Lessem cruise past Team Tap Dat and record their second victory on the young season. They are going to have a couple of extremely tough match-ups coming up on Sunday afternoon. In their first game of their scheduled double dip, they will battle #4 Team Rhum followed by the task of trying to take down #2 and undefeated Team Maione in what will be the Week 4 Game of the Week! HUGE week coming up for #3 Team Lessem.

4. Team Rhum – 2-2

The Runners-Up in the 2017 edition of the Chicago 16’’ Softball league, Team Rhum came into Week 3 with a .500 record and were hoping to get some revenge for their 2017 Championship game loss to Team Holzman. They unfortunately (or fortunately) left Week 3 with the exact same .500 mark and end up moving down into the #4 spot in the Week 4 Power Rankings. They started their Sunday afternoon with a 14-4 loss to Team Holzman and just could not produce enough runs to get past a smoking hot Team Holzman crew. Captain Adam, Robbie Feldman, Tyler Goldstein and Pearl were all able to knock in a run for Team Rhum on Sunday, but it was not nearly enough as Team Holzman put up a 14 spot and cruised pass Team Rhum to bring back some old memories. Team Rhum did not soak in this loss however as they bounced back nicely in Game 2 of their double header, slaughtering Team Shapiro by a final score of 20-9. Tyler Goldstein had a huge game at the plate in this one, knocking in 5 runs to take his season RBI total to 8. Captain Rhum also went 5-5 with 4 RBI and 4 Runs Scored to help secure his teams second W on the season. Team Rhum will be looking to jump up into the #3 spot on Sunday afternoon as they square off against a 2-1 Team Lessem squad in what will be a very important game for both squads.

5. Team Russell – 0-3

Team Russell got to take on the #2 ranked team and undefeated Team Maione squad on Sunday afternoon. By the final score of 13-3, Team Russell suffered their third consecutive defeat on Sunday and now stare at a 0-3 record to start their 2018 Summer campaign. They’d like to have that one back. It happens. You can’t make mistakes against Team Maione as they are just too good on both sides of the ball. Michael Collins drove in 2 of the 3 runs for Team Russell on Sunday while Jacob Pauls knocked in the third. They just could not find enough power from others in the lineup and that ultimately cost them the game. They’ll need to forget about this loss and the first three games of the season and simply regroup and hit the reset button on Sunday. They get to take on another winless team as they welcome Team Tap Dat (0-3) to Walter Payton HS on Sunday afternoon. One of these squads will be picking up their first W this season while the other one will have to do some serious soul searching on Sunday once all is said and done.

6. Team Shapiro- 0-3

Team Shapiro left Week 3 still in search of their first Win of the season but if you look at their numbers, they are going to record some wins here soon. They got slaughtered in Week 1 by Team Lessem and almost got slaughtered against #2 Team Maione in Week 2, scoring just a single run. They took the field this past Sunday against #4 Team Rhum and scored a season high 9 runs. Unfortunately, they allowed 20 and dropped their third consecutive game to start the season. AJ Price, Charlie Marks, Jake Kuznetsky and Captain Joey all knocked in 2 Runs but their pitching and defense just could not slow down the #1 team in the league. The good news for Team Shapiro is that their bats are looking like they are finally starting to heat up. The bad news is that the schedule does not get much easier from here. They are clearly improving but will need to have a huge day coming up on Sunday as they take the field against #1 and undefeated Team Holzman.

7. Team Tap Dat – 0-3

Team Tap Dat entered Week 3 as the lowest scoring team in the league and walked out of Week 3 in that same position. By the final score of 13-0, Team Tap Dat suffered their third consecutive defeat to start the season and have now scored only 2 runs through the first three games. Their pitching and defense is starting to come around, but they need to start to find some offense if they want to start winning games. If you look up and down their lineup, you can certainly find some talent. Captain Jim will continue to tinker with the lineup until he is able to find a winning formula. They have a nice opportunity coming up on Sunday afternoon as they take on a winless Team Russell squad. One of these squads will be picking up their first W this season while the other one will have to do some serious soul searching. Another loss here can certainly start to cause some panic while a W will get you right back in the thick of things. Big week coming up.

Hope everyone had a nice holiday and good luck to all in Week 4!
