2018 Chicago Summer 16″ Softball – Playoff Preview (August 19)

Updated: August 23, 2018

The Regular Season, which started all the way back on May 6th, has finally come to an end. The 2018 season has been such a marvelous example of parity that you really could set these 6 teams on a wall, blindfold yourself, spin around and pick the likely winner for this upcoming postseason. From Team Shapiro to Team Maione, there is a strong case to be made for each and every team going into this August/September dance. We knew that first placed Team Maione was going to start the post-season as either the #1 or #2 seed. They defeated Team Lessem in a barnburner to finish a solid 10-2 on Sunday afternoon and in doing so they destined Team Lessem into the #2 hole. Meanwhile, defending Back-to-Back Champions Team Holzman will enter the playoffs on Sunday afternoon as the overall #3 seed. We are going to highlight all upcoming games from the first Sunday of the Double Elimination Playoffs.

Playoff Preview

Opening Round G1 (Winners Bracket):

#4 Team Russell vs. #5 Team Rhum

Team Russell vs. Team Rhum is one of the headliners for Day 1 of the Playoffs. While both groups had a very solid regular season, it also means that one of these top-flight crews are going to take an L to start the Playoffs, which is not something that either group expected coming into this season. Just as Team Rhum were garnering all the league buzz as very tough seasoned All Sports Series veterans, Team Russell started a late-season surge that has them on the highest current winning streak (5) in the league. They are the hottest team in the league right now. They did it with power, timely hitting and some of the best starting pitching we’ve seen so far this season. Team Russell pushed all their chips into the middle of the table when they realized an August push was in play. Team Rhum won the first encounter between these two squads during the regular season all the way back in Week 2 (June 24th) while Team Russell picked up a forfeit victory in the last week of the regular season over Team Rhum. This game is a true coin-flip. The Winner will take on #1 Team Maione in the next round while the loser will have to go to Loser Bracket territory and Win 5 in a row, FIVE, to earn the Crown. Huge Game Gentleman.

Opening Round G2 (Winners Bracket)::

#3 Team Holzman vs. #6 Team Shapiro

Team Holzman got the easy forfeit W in the final week of the Regular Season, their 3rd straight victory, and will enter the 2018 postseason as the overall #3 seed. Not bad for a Team that had lost their previous 3 games and looked to be in a big midseason funk. They end up finishing the regular season with an overall 8-3 record and will need to open their 2018 postseason against #6 Team Shapiro. This is the one matchup that I am sure Team Shapiro didn’t want to see this early in the postseason. It means seeing the defending Back-to-Back Champs in their first Playoff Game. Team Shapiro is coming in off of a Loss to Team Russell in the final week of the Regular Season, but this group has the talent to get to the Championship. These guys have the experience and know how to survive and advance. These two squads only played once during the Regular Season back in Week 4 (July 8th) and #3 Team Holzman squeezed by #6 Team Shapiro 13-12 on that hot Summer day. Only one squad can move on after this affair, while the other drops into Elimination Game territory and what will be a very tough road. Huge Game upcoming for these two title-hopefuls.

Round 1 G3 (Winners Bracket):

#1 Team Maione vs. Winner of #4 Team Russell/#5 Team Rhum

#1 Team Maione comes into the Playoffs with a solid 10-2 regular season record and have more than earned the #1 overall seed for a second consecutive season. If they can win 3-more in a row (without a loss), they will hoist the coveted Summer 16’’ Crown. They can’t look too far ahead though as their road is going to be paved with several tough tests. Whoever gets the W in the #4 Russell/#5 Rhum Opening Round Game is going to be feeling very confident and possesses enough talent to pull off the upset. If Team Maione just plays their Game though and continues to hit bombs like they did throughout the regular season, they should certainly advance to the next round. These guys went 4-0 against these two squads combined during the regular season so they should have all the confidence in the world coming into this ballgame.

Round 1 G4 (Winners Bracket):

#2 Team Lessem vs. Winner of #3 Team Holzman/#6 Team Shapiro

Team Lessem comes in as the #2 seed in the 2018 postseason. A terrific regular season catapulted them into the #2 seed with the potential to finish as the overall #1 seed had they won their Regular season finale. As luck would have it, they dropped last week’s game against #1 Team Maione and must settle for the #2 spot. The loss was their second in a row and they will need to find some answers to those short-term problems they have experienced the last two weeks of the regular season if they want to make some noise this postseason. They will take on the Winner between #3 Team Holzman/#6 Team Shapiro. This squad lost their only game against #3 Team Holzman during the regular season but went 2-0 against #6 Team Shapiro. I’m sure they will be rooting hard for the Opening Round upset here but whoever they get they will need to be on their A-Game if they have any plans on making a Championship run. They are currently 3 Wins (in a row) away from doing just that!

Round 2 G7 (Winners Bracket):

#1 Team Maione/Winner of #3 Team Holzman/#6 Team Shapiro vs. #2 Team Lessem/ Winner of #3 Team Holzman/#6 Team Shapiro

Winner of this Game will move onto the Championship Game on Sunday, September 9th. This squad will be awaiting the Winner out of the Loser’s bracket and will need to win just 1 game to become 2018 Summer 16’’ Champs.

That’s it for the Playoff Preview. Good luck to all on Sunday!
