2018 Chicago Summer TUESDAY Hoops Week 1 – (June 12)

Updated: June 16, 2018

The 2018 Summer TUESDAY Hoops league has tipped off at long last, and although much can’t ever be made of the first week of games, we still rank all the teams. For most teams in the Summer Hoops league, the first week of action doesn’t change much. Yes, the results can force knee-jerk reactions from those on the outside but, for the most part, preseason analysis holds true after the (very) small samples from last season. The teams vying for the Crown on Tuesdays this Summer are in a VERY deep field. It doesn’t take long to see all the past Champions in this crowd either. First, are the defending Champs from the 2016 Summer Tuesday Hoops League – Team Maione, who will be led once again by captain Brad Deutsch in 2018. After losing out on Back-to-Back Championships last Summer, these guys will be looking to make it 3 straight Summer Finals appearances and to grab their 2nd Summer title in the last 3 years. Then, there are the 2015 Summer League Champs Team Darcy, who added to their trophy case this past Winter with another Championship. We also have Team Deutsch, who finished the Spring season with an undefeated regular season but came up just shy in the postseason. They’ll be licking their chops this Summer to get back to the promise land. We also have a couple of newcomers this season who’ll be looking to cement their names in the All Sports Series community. Strap on your seat belts and get ready as this is going to be a fun and very competitive Summer season!

Power Rankings

1. Team Maione – 1-0

Back-to-Back Summer finals appearances and an 82-59 opening night victory over newcomers The Movement, Team Maione is starting off our 2018 TUESDAY Summer Power Rankings in the #1 spot. Captain Brad Deutsch has continued the captaining duties this Summer and will be looking for some revenge for his squads 2017 Summer Finals loss, which could have made it Back-to-Back Summer Championships for Team Maione. They have former League MVP Chris Wroblewski on their roster this Summer (who missed opening night on Tuesday) as well as Andy Timson, Dylan Richter, Tellef Lundevall and Andy Marks. This team is stacked and most importantly, their core is intact for this Summer season. On opening night on Tuesday, all 5 of their starters were able to reach double digit figures, with Andy Marks leading the way with 18 points. Dylan Richter (2017-18 Fall league Scoring Champion) and Andy Timson also pitched in with 17 of their own to lock down a very solid opening night victory. They now will turn their attention to Team Davis in Week 2 and will look to maintain the #1 spot in the Summer TUESDAY Power Rankings.

2. Team Deutsch – 1-0

By the final score of 91-76, Team Deutsch got off to another great start and recorded their first win in their 2018 TUESDAY Summer Hoops league campaign. Captained by All Sports Series veteran Justin Deutsch (who was absent on opening night), Team Deutsch came out firing on all cylinders on Tuesday evening and were led by Brian Oddo’s 27-point performance. Four other players all recorded double digit scoring figures in this one as Jake Bischoff had 19, Michael Marietti and David Hess each had 14, and Brian Garvy pitched in with 10. This team is very balanced and can put up big numbers on any given Tuesday (as evident with their 91-point performance on opening night). Team Deutsch looks to be one of the most talented groups in the league once again this season, and, for the most part, they showed that on Tuesday night. They will look to build upon their very strong Spring campaign and will want nothing less than a shot at the title this Summer. Coming up in Week 2, Team Deutsch has a very difficult match-up against the squad that ended their dream season this Spring in the Final4, and currently undefeated at 1-0, Team Dean in our Week 2 Game of the Week!

3. Team Dean – 1-0

Coming in at the #3 spot in the Week 1 Power Rankings is our 2018 Spring finalists, Team Dean. If the Spring season was any indication, this is a group that is going to go very deep into the Playoffs this Summer. They are certainly one of the favorites this Summer and falling in the Spring championship game will only light a bigger fire under their you know what. Team Dean has made a name for themselves over the past few years in All Sports Series leagues and many are aware of their talent. Captain and floor general Tredrick Dean is an All Sports Series veteran who captains many teams and knows how to build a roster and culture of winning. Captain Tred’s 16-point performance on opening night along with Courtney Griffin’s Week 1 league high of 27-points, was a warning shot to the league to say they mean business this Summer and anything less than a title will be unacceptable. This is a group that should consistently be in the Top-3 of the Power Rankings. They get #2 Team Deutsch, the squad that they knocked off in the Final4 of our Spring season, in Week 2 in our Week 2 Game of the Week!

4. Team Darcy – 0-1

If you really want to get an idea of how deep this Summer league is going to be, look no further than our #4 ranked team in Week 1, 4x overall All Sports Series Hoops Champs, Team Darcy. This group is entering their 9th All Sports Series Hoops league and they have reached the Final4 in every All Sports Series league that they have played in. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me! The big question for Team Darcy this Summer will be…can they make 10 straight Final4 appearances and can they bring home that 5th ring? If you ask captain Bret Darcy, he will say that there is no doubt about it! Captain Bret led the charge for Team Darcy on opening night as he poured in a team high 24 points. Trevor Whitehead also had a huge night by contributing 21 points of his own, but unfortunately for Team Darcy they ended up going down on opening night to #2 Team Deutsch by a final score of 91-76. Jason Domash and Dan Turner also had nice opening nights by combing to score 25 points, but they just did not have enough on the defensive end of the court to stop the high-flying offense of Team Deutsch. Coming up on Tuesday night in Week 2, Team Darcy tips off against an 0-1 The Movement squad looking to get their first All Sports Series Hoops win.

5. Team Berkson – 0-1

Although they are one of the youngest groups in the league this Summer, Team Berkson is a veteran All Sports Series squad. Playing in many Champaign Campus Leagues over the years has helped them ease right into the Chicago Hoops Leagues. They are making their second straight Summer league appearance and will be looking to build upon their Elite8 finish from last Summer. By a final score of 71-60, Team Berkson took a tough loss to #3 Team Dean on opening night to start their 2018 Summer campaign at 0-1. Matt Kaplan led the scoring for Team Berkson with 15 points, and the rest of the scoring was distributed evenly as three other players were able to reach double digit scoring figures. Andrew Stempel and Justin Busiel both had 14 while Mitchell Talbot pitched in with 10 of his own. This is a solid squad that shares the ball well and will be a tough match-up week in and week out for any squad that they go up against. Up next for #5 Team Berkson is Team Lerman where they will be looking to pick up their first victory on this young season.

6. The Movement – 0-1

The Movement came into the Summer TUESDAY Hoops league as the only All Sports Series rookies. This is their first go around in any All Sports Series league but that did not deter them from giving the overall #1 Team Maione a tough game on opening night. Even with the final score looking worse than it was at 82-59, The Movement did not look intimidated whatsoever on Tuesday night and walked out of Windy City Fieldhouse with their first taste of what All Sports Series Hoops leagues are all about. The Movement is captained by Chicago Sport and Social Club Hoops veteran Robert Snowden, who is bringing in a squad coming fresh off a Spring CSSC Championship. And based on what we saw from them on Tuesday night, this squad will be serious contenders for the Summer TUESDAY Hoops Crown! They were led by Willie Harris on Tuesday night who paced the crew with 21 points, while Captain Snowden pitched in with 14 points of his own. David Addo and Lonnie Randolph also contributed to the teams scoring effort by combining to put up 17 points of their own. These guys have talent on this roster and it will be very interesting to see how fast they can adapt to the competition of All Sports Series Hoops leagues. They get another tough test coming up in Week 2 when they square off against #4 Team Darcy who will also be looking to snag their first victory on this 2018 Summer campaign.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Davis – 0-0

Team Lerman – 0-0

That’s a wrap for Week 1! Looking forward to another great week coming up on Tuesday night!
