2018 Madison Hoops – Playoff Preview (Oct. 30)

Updated: November 5, 2018

We have arrived, at long last, upon the 2018 Madison Hoops League postseason. This is great news for all 7 of our Teams as it is essentially a brand-new season for each of them. The caveat however is that each game from here on out will be do-or-die as the Winners from each of these games move on to the next round, while the losers from each game will have to pack it up for the Winter. It feels like we were just talking about the preseason and getting high hopes about our squads. But now we are heading into the postseason, and the Madison Hoops playoffs are about to get underway. With all 7 teams ready to fight for their shot at the title, let’s take a hard look at how this crazy game of poker is going to play out. It’s time to strap in; sorry Jim Mora, we are talking about Playoffs. Let’s go!

If you have ever want to find any info on the League.. Go to Campus Leagues > Madison League.. Everything you’d need from Stats to Schedules to Standings etc. will be found there..

Playoff Preview

BYE to Final4: #1 Team Kappa Sig SR (Adam Goldberg)

Team Kappa Sig SR earned the BYE to the Final4 when they clinched the #1 seed last week with victories over Team AEPi SR and Team Delta Upsilon JR. They finished a full 2.5 Games ahead of the 2 Teams tied for 2nd and now they can kick back and relax while everyone else dukes it out this Tuesday Night. They will be scoreboard watching as they take on the Winners of #4 Team AEPi SR vs. #5 Team Sammy SR. During the regular season, Team Kappa Sig SR went 2-0 against Team AEPi SR and 1-0 against Team Sammy SR. Who will be the other three Teams that join them on Nov. 13!?

Elite8: #2 Team Delta Upsilon JR (Clayton Reible) vs. #7 Team Fiji SR (Grant Bailey)

Team Delta Upsilon JR earned the #2 seed thanks to the H2H tiebreaker with Team Theta Chi SR and as a result get to take on #7 Team Fiji SR in the Elite8 Round Game. #2 Team DU finished the regular season with a solid 4-2 record but will be coming into the 2018 postseason on a little 2-game losing streak. Captain Clayton and his almost 8 PPG average will be looking to avenge their last two losses and book a trip into the Final4. A win for #2 Team DU will see them advance to the Final4 on Tuesday, November 13th and await the winner of the #3/#6 match-up. A loss will see them pack up their bags a lot sooner than they expected and say sayonara to their 2018 campaign. #7 Team Fiji SR enters the 2018 postseason as the overall #7 seed as they finished their Regular Season campaign with a 1-5 overall record. They’ll enter the postseason with an overall 1-5 record as just stated, but a big Week 6 win over #5 Team Sammy SO should give them lots of motivation heading into this Elite8 round match-up. Jack Tillotson and Tyler Byrne led Team Fiji in scoring during the regular season and they will be heavily leaned on in this match-up if they plan on advancing to the Final4 round.

Elite8: #3 Team Theta Chi SR (Noah Stern) vs. #6 Team Sammy SO (Brian Unger)

Team Theta Chi SR and Captain Noah Stern will enter the 2018 postseason as the #3 seed as they lost the H2H tiebreaker with #2 Team Delta Upsilon JR, and as a result get to take on #6 Team Sammy SO in the Elite8 Round Game. These two squads played one another all the way back on October 2nd, and it wasn’t pretty for Team Sammy SO. #3 Team Theta Chi SR had a great day on that cool October evening, blowing out #6 Team Sammy SO by a final score of 67-39. It’ll be a new day and a new Game however and Team Theta Chi SR should not overlook Team Sammy SO who has shown they can play with the League’s best. Team Theta Chi is led by Payton Simon and his 16.33 PPG average and will be a handful for Team Sammy SO. Playoff Games do however have a way of getting crazy and if Team Sammy SO can put some pressure on the favorites early, who knows what can happen. Only one spot in the Final4 is available for these 2 Teams. The eventual Winner is looking at a likely match up with #2 Team Delta Upsilon JR. We did get to see a #2 vs. #3 match-up in the Regular Season and it was an instant classic as #2 DU beat Team Theta Chi by a final score of 73-70 on that day. A rematch between those two squads would surely be a fun one with a spot in the Championship on the line! But as we have stated before, anything can happen in the Playoffs!

Elite8: #4 Team AEPi SR (Ben Kohl) vs. #5 Team Sammy SR (Jared Nossen)

The #4/#5 Elite8 round match-up has a chance to steal the show on Tuesday night and will be our Game of the Week! The 4/5 Game is usually a very even match-up and these two Teams are more than capable of turning in special Playoff performances. These two Teams met all the way back on October 11th and on that day #4 Team AEPi won by forfeit as Team Sammy SR did not have enough available bodies to play on that day. But that was then, and this is now, and this will be a totally different Game in which anything can happen. Team AEPi SR will be led by Charley Wadler and his 19.75 PPG average on the year. Meanwhile Team Sammy SR will be led by Captain and Floor General Jared Nossen and his whopping 22 PPG average on the season. These two squads are so evenly matched that either of these clubs could not only win this game but can take the title home this year. Both Groups need to be locked in here to get the Win. The Winner will move on to the Final4 where they will presumably assume the role of David v. the Goliath known as #1 Team Kappa Sig SR. First things first, their Elite8 match-up awaits!

That’s it for the Playoff Preview! Good Luck to everyone on Tuesday Night for the Playoffs!
