2019-20 THE Chicago Hoops Week 5 – (Nov. 10)

By
Updated: November 15, 2019

Somehow, we’ve already hit the quarter mark of the 2019-20 THE CHI Hoops season.

This checkpoint, which kind of feels like it’s arrived about 10 seconds after the season opener, offers us an opportunity for perspective. Players/fans of all 11 teams should react to their squad’s current strength or weakness just as they would after the first 11 minutes of any game.

Maybe your squad’s down by 20 points already. Or maybe it’s up 20. Maybe all hope is lost. Maybe it isn’t. Just remember one thing…you’ve got three quarters left! So, if something seemed certain before the season started, you cannot abandon that belief in the face of a little contradictory information.

One thing that I would like to remind everyone about is that all 11 of our squads will make our triple-elimination Playoff. But each higher seed is so much more important than the next.

So, forget everything I just wrote about being patient. Go ahead and panic or exalt as circumstances dictate! Overreacting is more fun anyways, right?

As always, our Power Rankings are based on records, season-long stats and recent play. The idea here is to organize all 11 teams into an order that reflects the league’s current power structure, which might already be more settled than you all think.

Quickly, for those Playing in their first All Sports Series League.. Here’s what to expect from the weekly Power Rankings.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-8 with the UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. Also, if you have ever want to find any info on the League.. Go to Chicago Leagues > THE CHI Hoops League.. Everything you’d need from Stats to Schedules to Standings etc. will be found there..

Power Rankings

1. Lakeshore show – 5-0

Our Week 4 Game of the Week certainly did not disappoint on Sunday afternoon as our new #1 Team Lakeshore show earned a hard fought 67-59 victory over our new #4 Team Swish House crew. Steven Cook stole the show in this one, finishing with a game-high 35 points (14-22 FG) and 6 rebounds. Cook has been a tremendous addition to Team Lakeshore show this season, averaging 22.7 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists per game. Combine these numbers with reigning MVP Eric Porter’s 27 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game and we arguably have our top 1-2 punch in the League. Team Lakeshore show now sees their record sit at a perfect 5-0 and get a match-up coming up on Sunday afternoon with our only other undefeated squad, #2 Team Onions (5-0) in our Week 6 Game of the Week! Winner of this game will have sole possession of first place and in the driver’s seat of the THE CHI Hoops league standings.

2. Onions – 5-0

Slowly but surely #2 Team Onions keeps creeping up our Weekly Power Rankings. #2 Team Onions played two games on Sunday afternoon (their second DH in the last three weeks) and just like two weeks ago, recorded another convincing sweep. By the final score of 74-67, #2 Team Onions rallied past a tough Team Reisner crew behind Ryan Coyle’s 20 point (9-15 FG), 8 rebound and 4 assist performance. Brian N. contributed with 19 points (8-15 FG) and Joel Pennington was able to help seal the victory by pitching in with 15 points (6-14 FG) of his own. #2 Team Onions had to keep this energy up as they had to step right back onto the court and take on another tough challenger, Team Schwartz. And they did just that as they recorded their fifth straight victory to start the season, blowing by Team Schwartz by a final score of 80-60. Ryan Coyle once again led the way for #2 Team Onions in this contest, finishing with 21 points (9-13 FG), 9 rebounds and a couple of assists. Joel Pennington, Brian N. and Captain Michael Schultz were all able to record double digit scoring efforts, finishing with 16, 14 and 11 respectively. #2 Team Onions is clicking on all cylinders right now and will need to keep this effort up coming up on Sunday afternoon as they get to take on #1 Team Lakeshore show (5-0) in our Week 6 Game of the Week!

3. Wolverines – 4-1

For the second consecutive week, our defending back-to-back Champions have recorded 27+ point victories. This time it was against #6 Team Bucket SZN by a final score of 85-78. With this Week 5 convincing victory, they move up into the #3 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings. This was an all-around team win for #3 Team Wolverines as all six dressed players were able to record double digit scoring efforts. Timothy Flowers dominated in this contest, dropping 20 points (10-17 FG) while hauling down 11 boards. Darren Moore also pitched in with 20 points (10-13 FG) to help put this game away early. This squad is so deep and can hurt you from everywhere on the court. They may not be as dominant through the first five weeks as the last couple of seasons, but their overall resume remains unimpeachable. This team is gunning for history. They’ll look to record their third straight win coming up on Sunday when they take the court against long-time rivals #5 Team Maione (3-2).

4. Team Swish House – 4-1

Team Swish House suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of new #1 Team Lakeshore show on Sunday afternoon. As a result, they fall all the way down into the #4 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings. While Team Swish House lost the game 67-59, Alex Foster made his season debut and almost carried these guys to victory with his 20 point (9-12 FG) and 6 rebound performance. The storyline coming into this contest was Offense vs. Defense. #4 Team Swish House came into this contest with the league’s #1 Offense, averaging just over 100 PPG. #1 Team Lakeshore show came into this game with one of the league’s best Defenses, holding opponents to just under 65 PPG. Unfortunately for #4 Team Swish House, they lost this battle as they were held to their lowest scoring output on the year…and by a lot! They’ll need to put this loss behind them quickly as they have another tough match-up coming up on Sunday evening when they take the court against Team New Birth (0-5) who’ll be doing everything in their power to notch their first victory on the season.

5. Team Maione – 3-2

Team Maione got back into the winner’s circle on Sunday evening with a convincing victory over Team New Birth by a final score of 79-54. Dylan Richter was simply dominant in this game, pouring in a game-high 35 points (13-22 FG) to go along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Tellef Lundevall and Nicholas Livas combined for 32 points and Captain Bradley Deutsch was dishing the rock all game long as he finished with a game-high 10 assists. Team Maione gets things done by committee on a weekly basis and when they are on, they are almost impossible to stop! They’ll look to build on this Week 5 victory coming up on Sunday afternoon with two games on the docket. They’ll first take the court against #8 Team Hoop Dreams (1-4) before running it right back against long-time rivals #4 Team Wolverines (4-1). This will be the first of two meetings between these two squads this season and will surely have some sort of impact on seedings come Playoff time. Huge game(s) comings up on Sunday!

6. Bucket SZN – 3-2

Team Bucket SZN struggled to get anything going offensively on Sunday afternoon as they took one to the chin against #5 Team Maione, falling by a final score of 79-54. Even though #6 Team Bucket SZN lost the game by 25 points, Jeremy Ireland had another strong game as he continues to look like the #1 option in this very deep squad. Ireland finished with 26 points (12-22 FG) and 6 rebounds but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep pace with the high scoring Team Maione crew. Captain Rodney Clark finished with 12 points (4-10 FG) but no other player scored more than 7 for Team Bucket SZN in this contest. Team Bucket SZN are still a very good Team, and those good teams tend to bounce back quickly after tough losses like this. You can expect that from them here. And they’ll need to put this Loss in the rear-view mirror ASAP because next up on the calendar coming up in Week 6 is a date with a Team Schwartz (0-5) squad that will be doing everything in their power to snag their first victory on the season.

7. Team Reisner – 2-4

#7 Team Reisner fell on Sunday afternoon to undefeated #2 Team Onions by a final score of 74-67. This is surely a game that these guys will want back as they had their opportunities to steal a victory here. Marin Kukoc had a monster game for Team Reisner, finishing with 22 points (9-18) to go along with 10 boards. Christian Dean also stepped up big time for Team Reisner in this contest, finishing with 15 points (7-12 FG), 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Tyler Max and Adam Rhum also finished with 14 points apiece. Unfortunately for Team Reisner, they could not make the crucial stops they needed too down the stretch and took their 4th loss of the season. #7 Team Reisner will look to quickly put this loss behind them and snag their third win of the season coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against The Dribbling Seamen (1-4) who’ll be looking to put an end to their 3-game losing streak.

8. Hoop Dreams – 1-4

Last week we said this squad simply needed to hit the restart button after losing their first four games to start the season and that’s exactly what they did on Sunday evening. By the final score of 90-85, Team Hoop Dreams picked up their first win on the 2019-20 campaign and first ever THE CHI Hoops victory. Mike L., who made his season debut on Sunday, was a man on a mission along with teammate Kevin Sexton. Mike finished with a game-high 32 points (13-23 FG) and 6 rebounds and Sexton poured in 31 points (12-16 FG) to go along with 9 assists as Team Hoop Dreams was finally able to get off the schneid and get into the winner’s circle. James Webb also had a nice all-around game, just missing out on a triple-double, finishing with 11 points (5-17 FG), 11 rebounds and 7 assists. Now that Team Hoops Dreams got their first taste of victory, they’ll look to build on this important win coming up in Week 6 as they have a date against a very tough #5 Team Maione (3-2) crew.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

New Birth – 0-5

Team New Birth dropped their fifth straight decision on Sunday night, falling to #5 Team Maione by a final score of 79-54. Maurice Liggins led the way on Sunday evening, finishing with 20 points (9-15 FG) and 4 rebounds. Captain Cannan Blair had another nice game, producing 11 points (5-9 FG) to go along with 2 rebounds and 4 assists. This squad has a top-flight roster and are just not seeing the results we are used to seeing out of them thus far in 2019-20. Their issues have mostly come on the Defensive end where they are in the Bottom-4 of the league for Points Allowed Per Game. That means they need incredible Offensive performances each week to win and it’s just not happening right now. They need to treat the first 5 weeks as “pre-season” and just start over from 0-0. They certainly have the talent to rattle off 10 or 11 Wins in the next 13 Games and put this slow start in the rear-view mirror. Team New Birth will take on #4 Team Swish House (4-1) coming up in Week 6. Now is the time to turn it around.

Team Schwartz – 0-5

One of the most surprising story lines so far this season must be Team Schwartz’s incredibly slow start. They dropped their fifth consecutive decision on Sunday afternoon, falling to #2 Team Onions by a final score of 80-60. Team Schwartz has certainly put forth some game efforts, but a 0-5 start has set them apart from the rest of the league’s unranked. Virtually everyone else in the bottom four have won at least once (except for Team New Birth), which makes our job easier to punt Team Schwartz further down into the depths of the unranked. Shout out to Jermaine Johnson however, who every contender in need of spacing would love to have on their squad. He went for 22 points (10-20 FG), 8 rebounds and 3 assists in Sunday’s loss to #2 Team Onions. So far on the season, Johnson is averaging 20.8 PPG, 9.5 RPG and 4.8 APG. All-Star numbers to say least. Johnson and the rest of the Team Schwartz crew will look to snag their first win coming up on Sunday when they take the court against #6 Team Bucket SZN (3-2).

The Dribbling Seamen – 1-4

The Dribbling Seamen fell by just five points against #8 Team Hoop Dreams on Sunday evening in a Game that was certainly winnable. They just needed an extra bounce or two to go their way. Andrew Bargmann had a career day from the floor, finishing with 42 points (17-20 FG), 7 rebounds and 6 assists in his squad’s heartbreaking 90-85 loss. Bargmann’s 42 led all scorers in Week 5! Captain Robert Mischler got back on track in this contest as well, finishing with a season-high 31 points (11-20 FG), 13 rebounds and 4 assists. These guys certainly have the talent and scorers to still make a major impact on the rest of this season. They will however need to make some major improvements on the Defensive end of the court as they currently own the league’s worst Defense (92 PAPG). They will look to secure their second victory of the season and move back into the rankings in Week 6 when they take the court against #7 Team Reisner (2-4).

That’s a wrap for Week 5! Good luck to all on Sunday!
