Championship Saturday Review:

CHAMPIONSHIP: #1 Team Gallender vs. #3 Team Lowenthal

Considering it was one of only three touchdowns in the entire game, QB Jonathan Wasserman’s two-yard rushing score at the end of the first half must be one of the highlights of the 2019 HP Prep Flag Football Championship Game.

This was the first Championship Game in HP Prep Flag Football League history that had only two touchdowns going into halftime, as #1 Team Gallender and #3 Team Lowenthal were tied 6-6 entering halftime. But #3 Team Lowenthal capitalized on costly interceptions in both halves by QB Josh Gallender.

#1 Team Gallender started this game off in style as they have all season long, moving the ball methodically down the field in their first possession of the game that would lead to a very nice 20-yard TD strike downfield from QB Josh Gallender to Jake Haley for an early 6-0 lead.

#3 Team Lowenthal would struggle to get anything going offensively in the first half but their defense regrouped after allowing an early TD and came up with two huge interceptions in the first half, both by Jonah Long. In their final possession of the first half QB Wasserman led a nice long drive down the field that would end up in a two-yard TD Rush by QB Wasserman to tie the game up at 6 entering the half.

Both teams came out of halftime hoping to get their offenses rolling but unfortunately both teams would have some struggles against supurb defensive play. QB Josh Gallender and QB Jonathan Wasserman would both have costly interceptions in the second half. Both defenses made key stops to keep their teams in the game.

With only a few minutes left on the clock, this game was looking like it had O.T. written all over it. However, QB Wasserman would get the ball back with roughly five minutes left on the lock and would start to march his squad down the field. He had multiple passes to Jonah Long on the drive that would lead to crucial first downs. With now only two minutes left on the clock, QB Wasserman would throw a dart down the field to Nick Shapiro who came up with a fantastic grab and give #3 Team Lowenthal a 12-6 lead.

#1 Team Gallender would get the ball back with a little less than two minutes on the clock and two timeouts in their pocket. A couple of short completions and a devastating sack on a crucial third down would lead to a do-or-die fourth down play to keep the game alive. QB Gallender fired a ball down the field intended for Haley but the ball was tipped and fell into the hands of defender Nick Shapiro for the win!

For Team Gallender – they must be proud of what they accomplished this season. While they didn’t win the whole thing, they finished with the overall #1 seed and a perfect 6-0 regular season. This is a group that can build upon this Playoff run and earn a Crown down the road. No doubt about that. Thanks for playing!

Now to the back-to-back Champs Team Lowenthal! They had such an impressive run to the Crown for the second straight season! Their Defense was simply amazing during the 2019 Playoffs. They held their three Playoff opponents to an average of 8.3 PPG. Their Offense stayed aggressive and it allowed their Defense to play with confidence and the lead. Congrats again to the back-to-back Champs!

That’s it for the season. THANK YOU all again for playing and hope to see everyone back here soon.
