2019 HP Prep Flag Football – Playoff Preview (Nov. 02)

Updated: November 6, 2019

We have finally arrived to the 2019 HP Prep Flag Football League postseason! This is great news for all 6 of our squads as it is essentially a brand-new season for each of them. The caveat however is that each game from here on out will be do-or-die as the winners from each of these games move on to the next round, while the losers from each game will have to pack it up for the Winter. It feels like we were just talking about the preseason and getting high hopes about our squads. But now we are heading into the postseason, and the HP Prep Flag Football Playoffs are about to get underway. With all 6 teams ready to fight for their shot at the title, let’s take a hard look at how this crazy game of poker is going to play out. It’s time to strap in; sorry Jim Mora, we are talking about Playoffs. Let’s go!

Playoff Preview:

Opening Round: #3 Team Lowenthal vs. #6 Team Segal

The defending Champions, Team Lowenthal, will enter the 2019 postseason as the #3 seed as they lost the overall points differential tiebreaker with #2 Team Goldman, and as a result get to take on #6 Team Segal in the Opening Round Game. These two squads met back in Week 4 with Team Lowenthal walking away with a solid 34-24 victory. #3 Team Lowenthal had an opportunity to clinch the overall #2 seed in Week 6, unfortunately they could not secure the victory and ultimately must settle for the #3 overall seed. It’ll be a new day and a new Game however coming up on Saturday afternoon but Team Lowenthal should not overlook #6 Team Segal who have shown they can play with the League’s best (even though their overall record may say otherwise). Team Lowenthal is led by QB Jonathan Wasserman and his 11 Total TDs during the regular season, so he will certainly be a handful for Team Segal. Playoff Games do however have a way of getting crazy and if #6 Team Segal can put some pressure on the favorites early, who knows what can happen. Only one spot in the Final4 is available for these 2 squads. The eventual Winner of this contest will step right back onto the field and take on #2 Team Goldman for a spot in Championship Saturday! We did see #2 Team Goldman match up against #3 Team Lowenthal on two separate occasions during the Regular Season and a third rubber match game would surely be a fun one with a spot in the Championship on the line! But as we have stated before, anything can happen in the Playoffs!

Opening Round: #4 Team Fleisher vs. #5 Team Burstyn

The #4/#5 Elite8 round match-up has a chance to steal the show on Saturday and will be our Opening Round Game of the Week! The 4/5 Game is usually a very even match-up and these two Teams are more than capable of turning in special Playoff performances. These two Teams met all the way back in the end of September (Week 3) and on that day #4 Team Fleisher squeezed out a win versus #5 Team Burstyn by a final score of 40-33. With that Week 3 victory, Team Fleisher secured what would be one of their two regular season victories and propelled them over #5 Team Burstyn and #6 Team Segal. But that was then, and this is now, and this will be a totally different ballgame in which anything can happen. Team Fleisher will be led by QB Billy Rudman and his 16 total TDs on the year (2nd overall in the League) while Team Burstyn will be led by captain and QB Jesse Burstyn and his 12 total TDs on the year (3rd overall in the League). These two squads are so evenly matched that either of these clubs could not only win this game but can take the title home this year. Both Groups need to be locked in here to get the Win. The Winner will immediately move on to the Final4 where they will assume the role of David v. the Goliath known as #1 Team Gallender. First things first, their Opening Round match-up awaits!

Final4: #1 Team Gallender vs. Winner of #4 vs. #5

Team Gallender completed their perfect Regular Season on Saturday afternoon by taking down #5 Team Burstyn by the final score of 46-0. They went 6-0 and were simply dominant in doing so. Captain and QB Josh Gallender leads the League with a whopping 24 TD Passes (25 TD’s overall). Zach Pomerantz and Jake Haley were tied for the league lead with Jackson Goldman of #2 Team Goldman with 8 TD grabs each. This squad is as high-powered as it gets. The question becomes, can anyone slow these guys down? Their first test in the 2019 postseason will come against the winner of the #4 Team Fleisher vs. #5 Team Burstyn game in the Final4. #4 Team Fleisher did give #1 Team Gallender all that they could handle back in Week 4 but #1 Team Gallender found a way to win the game down the stretch as they have been doing all season long. They also dominated #5 Team Burstyn on Saturday afternoon in their regular season finale so whoever they get coming up on Saturday afternoon will still see them as huge favorites to make it to Championship Saturday. The great thing about the postseason however is that anything can happen, and you must be on your A-game if you want to hoist that crown.

Final4: #2 Team Goldman vs. Winner of #3 vs. #6

What a difference one year makes. #2 Team Goldman enters the 2019 postseason as the overall #2 seed and an Opening Round BYE. They entered the playoffs last season as the overall #7 seed. What a turnaround this squad has made in just one season. They’ll enter the postseason with an overall 4-2 record but a huge Week 6 win over #3 Team Lowenthal should give them lots of motivation heading into this Final4 round match-up. Jonah Long, Adam Glickman and captain Jackson Goldman led Team Goldman in the regular season with 27 Total TDs and Team Goldman will be leaning on all three of them heavily in this Final4 match-up if they plan on advancing to Championship Saturday. They’ll take on the winner of the #3 Team Lowenthal vs. #6 Team Segal match-up. Team Goldman split their season series with #3 Team Lowenthal and were rewarded the #2 seed over #3 Team Lowenthal based on overall point differential. #2 Team Goldman recorded a solid 33-12 victory over #6 Team Segal back in Week 6 and should they get the opportunity to take them on in the Final4, would be huge favorites. A match-up however with #3 Team Lowenthal again in the Final4 would certainly bring some fireworks once again with it.

That’s it for the Playoff Preview! Good Luck to everyone on Saturday!
