Playoff Preview:

Opening Round: #3 Team Lowenthal vs. #6 Team Segal

The defending Champions, Team Lowenthal, entered the 2019 postseason as the overall #3 seed as they lost the overall points differential tiebreaker with #2 Team Goldman during the regular season. As a result of this, they had to take on #6 Team Segal in the Opening Round Game on Saturday afternoon. These two squads met back in Week 4 of the Regular Season with #3 Team Lowenthal walking away with a solid 34-24 victory. This Opening Round game had a very similar outcome. By the final score of 41-12, #3 Team Lowenthal cruised to victory, led by QB Jonathan Wasserman and his 5 total TD passes. These guys got off to a quick start as they led 24-0 at halftime. Wasserman was spreading the ball all over the field in this contest as he connected with three different receivers for TD strikes. Josh Rohn and Tanner Mack were both on the receiving ends of two of them and Josh Mack was also able to snag one of them. #6 Team Segal made it a little more interesting in the second half, but it was too little too late. #3 Team Lowenthal would move on into the Final4 and immediately take the field in a highly anticipated match-up with long-time rivals #2 Team Goldman for a spot in Championship Saturday! More on this game below…

For #6 Team Segal, their 2019 season probably ended a little sooner than they had hoped but they certainly competed week in and week out. By the final score of 41-12, #6 Team Segal saw their 2019 campaign come to an end. These guys were down big at halftime in this contest but were able to make some noise in the second half as Captain Rocky and Max Lens were able to toss TD passes to Oren Salinas. Unfortunately for #6 Team Segal, it was too little too late. Team Segal now has two full seasons under their belts in the HP Prep Flag Football League and will go into 2020 as one of the more experienced squads. This will make a huge difference compared to the last two years. If Captain Rocky Segal and Co. can find a few more pieces to add to their puzzle, they will certainly be one of the favorites going into next year. Thanks for playing!

Opening Round: #4 Team Fleisher vs. #5 Team Burstyn

The #4/#5 Opening Round match-up had a chance to steal the show on Saturday afternoon but ended up turning into a blowout as #4 Team Fleisher cruised to a 31-0 victory over #5 Team Burstyn. These two squads met all the way back in the end of September (Week 3) and on that day #4 Team Fleisher squeezed out a 40-33 victory. #4 Team Fleisher was determined to not make it a close call again on Saturday afternoon as they dominated this contest. Captain Nate was all over the field as he finished with two Rushing scores and one Receiving touchdown. QB Billy Rudman continued to build on his fantastic 2019 season as he finished with one Passing score, one Rushing score and a Defensive TD. #4 Team Fleisher’s Defense was dominating all game long as they pitched their first shutout of the season and held #5 Team Burstyn’s offense in check all game long. #4 Team Fleisher would move on into the Final4 and immediately take the field in a highly anticipated match-up with #1 Team Gallender for a spot in Championship Saturday! More on this game below…

For #5 Team Burstyn – their 2019 season did not end how they wanted it too on Saturday afternoon. By the final score of 31-0, #5 Team Burstyn saw their 2019 campaign end abruptly. Unfortunately, they could not get anything rolling on offense in this contest and were shutout for the second time this season. Their defense also had trouble containing #4 Team Fleisher’s offense. But they have nothing to be ashamed about as they had a very nice overall season. All the credit in the world goes to this squad. They were by far the youngest Team in the field this season and they have a lot of games left to play in future seasons. They were able to get a victory this season, which not a lot of newcomers have done in the past. They battled week in and week out and even had their chances in picking up more victories along the way. Their inexperience showed against a very talented and older #4 Team Fleisher crew in the Opening Round, but they’ll come back stronger next Fall and be one of the favorites for the Crown. Thank you for playing!

Final4: #1 Team Gallender vs. #4 Team Fleisher

Team Gallender completed a perfect Regular Season. They came into the 2019 postseason as overwhelming favorites. They destroyed the competition in the Regular Season and finished undefeated. They had an Opening Round bye and were waiting in the Final4 for the winner of the #4 Team Fleisher vs. #5 Team Burstyn game. They would watch #4 Team Fleisher cruise to victory and step right back onto the field to take them on in our Final4 match-up. One word would describe this game; WOW! By the final score of 8-7, #1 Team Gallender would scrape out a one-point nail-biting victory and cement their name in the 2019 HP Prep Flag Championship Game. #1 Team Gallender struggled for 35 minutes to get any kind of Offense going. #4 Team Fleisher’s Defense was simply dominating, and this was looking like a repeat of last season when #1 Team Scornavacco suffered a shocking upset in the Final4. Fortunately for #1 Team Gallender, Captain Josh and Jake Haley came to the rescue with only minutes left on the clock in the second half as they connected on a long bomb down the field to get on the board and cut their deficit to 7-6. They had an opportunity to go for the 1-point extra point and potentially send this game into O.T. but decided to put all their chips into the basket and go for the victory and the 2-point conversation. They would convert the 2-point conversion and book their spot into Championship Saturday!

For #4 Team Fleisher – the only word I can think of here is heartbreak. These guys simply dominated this Final 4 game on the defensive end. #1 Team Gallender just could not contain Captain Nate as he recorded sack after sack and continued to put pressure on QB Josh Gallender. They held a 7-0 halftime lead and all signs were pointing to an upset in the making. Their Defense made one mistake the entire game and unfortunately for #4 Team Fleisher, would end up costing them the game. There is no doubt that they played their best game on the year in this Final4 match-up, unfortunately it just did not end in a victory. These guys were incredible all season long and they were one of the most entertaining teams to watch. We hope to see you guys in the league again next year and thanks for playing!

Final4: #2 Team Goldman vs. # 3 Team Lowenthal

For the second consecutive season, #3 Team Lowenthal secured an upset victory to advance to Championship Saturday! By the final score of 20-7, #3 Team Lowenthal slipped by #2 Team Goldman and now have given themselves an opportunity to win back-to-back titles for the first time in League history! Having just played a game the hour before, you would think that #3 Team Lowenthal may be low on gas playing in this contest, but quite the contrary my friends. #3 Team Lowenthal came out on fire, jumping out to a big 14-0 lead before halftime. QB Jonathan Wasserman continued right where he left off in the Opening Round contest, tossing 3 TD passes to help his squad advance to the Championship Game. Jonah Long was on the receiving end of two of these TD passes and Tanner Mack also secured a nice grab to get himself onto the scoreboard. #2 Team Goldman did not give up and made it a game in the second half, unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to secure the victory. These two squads have gotten to know each other very well over the past three years and the intensity ran high throughout this game. #3 Team Lowenthal will now take on #1 Team Gallender on Saturday afternoon in what will be the last time they take the field in the HP Prep Flag Football League. Going to be a fun one on Saturday!

For #2 Team Goldman – it was a heck of a run. These guys have been a staple of this league since it’s inauguration and it’s unfortunate to see them bow out in the Final4. They certainly had their opportunities on Saturday afternoon, unfortunately they just could not find enough Offense as they ended up going down by a final score of 20-7. Captain Jackson recorded their only touchdown in this game, taking a pitch into the endzone to keep his guys in this game. These guys improved tremendously over the years and we wish them luck in their future endeavors. Thank you, gentleman, for playing!

That’s it for the Week 1 Playoff Review! Going to be a fun Championship Game coming up on Saturday!
