Power Rankings

1. Team Lowenthal – 1-0

Team Lowenthal returns to the 2019 HP Flag Football League as our defending 2018 Champions. After a remarkable run in the 2018 postseason that saw them bring home their first ever title, Team Lowenthal will be looking for a repeat performance in 2019 and an opportunity to call themselves back-to-back Champs. They got their 2019 season off on the right track and leave Week 1 with the #1 overall ranking as they breezed by #6 Team Goldman by a final score of 27-15. Jonathan Wasserman stole the show in this contest as he tossed 4 total TD passes, two of which connected with Tanner Mack. Mack led all receivers in Week 1 with his two solid TD grabs. Josh Mack and Giulio Pettenati also connected with QB Wasserman for a couple of nice TD grabs that helped seal the deal for Team Lowenthal in Week 1. Team Lowenthal will look to keep this momentum rolling into Week 2 coming up on Saturday afternoon as they’ll take the field against #5 Team Burstyn (0-1) who’ll be looking to avenge their narrow 5-point loss on opening day.

2. Team Segal – 1-0

Team Segal spent most of their 2018 season near the bottom of our Power Rankings as they were the youngest assembled and most inexperienced squad in the league. They battled every week but were always just a play away from coming out on top. 2019 is a new year and while Team Segal may still be one of the younger assembled squads coming into the 2019 season, they certainly are no longer inexperienced. Behind the legs and arm of Captain Rocky, Team Segal picked up their first ever HP Prep Flag Football League victory on Saturday afternoon as they squeezed by newcomers #5 Team Burstyn by a final score of 12-7. Captain Rocky and Henry Eisenberg connected on a nice play before Rocky was able to seal the victory by rushing a score in. Team Segal’s Defense also looked much more disciplined than last years Defense as they gave up the fewest points (7) in Week 1. If Team Segal keeps developing their chemistry and stays with a consistent lineup, they will continue to rack up victories in this league. They’ll look to stay undefeated coming up on Saturday afternoon when they take on #3 Team Gallender (1-0) in our Week 2 Game of the Week!

3. Team Gallender – 1-0

Team Gallender enters the 2019 HP Prep Flag Football League as one of our newer squads, but that did little to scare them away in Week 1. They defeated #4 Team Fleisher 14-12 in a tough defensive battle on Saturday afternoon to record their first victory on the 2019 campaign. Both squads struggled to get things rolling offensively early on, but Captain Josh was able to connect with Jack Gerber and Jake Haley on a couple of solid throws to help secure this squads first victory in 2019. They were able to make some crucial plays on Offense (check out the highlight video) while their defense put up a dominating performance, allowing only 12 points. This is looking like a squad that will be in the thick of the title race the entire season and if they can get a few things clicking on the Offensive side of the ball, watch out! They will come into Week 2 looking to take their record to 2-0 when they take the field against #2 Team Segal (1-0) in our Week 2 Game of the Week!

4. Team Fleisher – 0-1

Team Fleisher comes into the 2019 HP Flag Football league with high aspirations, just like the rest of the teams in this league, but left Week 1 questioning their performance. By a final score of 14-12, Team Fleisher dropped their first game of the 2019 campaign against #3 Team Gallender and are already searching for some answers. From a Defensive perspective, this squad played as solid as can be. They made some big stops when they needed them. From an Offensive perspective, they know that they still have some work to do. QB Evan Lichtmann did his part on Saturday afternoon as he was able to toss a TD pass to Ben Shanberg and Billy Rudman to help keep his squad in this game. Captain Nate and Co. have tons of talent to work with on their roster and as the season moves along you can expect them to improve a bunch. They can’t dwell on this performance for too long however as they have a tough match-up looming on Saturday afternoon in Week 2 against #6 Team Goldman (0-1).

5. Team Burstyn – 0-1

Team Burstyn ran into the Buzzsaw that is #2 Team Segal in Week 1. By the final score of 12-7, Team Burstyn picked up their first loss on this young season. Team Burstyn enters the 2019 HP Prep Flag Football League as one of our younger squads like #2 Team Segal, however #2 Team Segal’s year of experience in 2018 shined through in this opening day contest. Team Burstyn’s Defense looked solid all game and was able to force a couple of crucial turnovers to keep them in this game. Team Burstyn also put together solid drives on Offense throughout this game, but repeatedly shot themselves in foot in what turned out to be a turnover fest. Their only score of the game came on a Captain Jesse TD pass to Charlie Goldman. This squad has a full playbook and these guys are going to improve quickly as the Fall moves along. They’ll head into Week 2 with another tough match-up against the defending 2018 Champs, #1 Team Lowenthal. Big game coming up for both squads in Week 2!

6. Team Goldman – 0-1

Team Goldman comes back in 2019 for their third consecutive season in the HP Flag Football league and took on #1 and defending Champions Team Lowenthal in Week 1. They unfortunately did not come out on the right side of the W/L column as they went down by a final score of 27-15. The good news for Team Goldman is that there is a ton of time to turn it around and Captain Jackson and Co. will be just fine. Their defense struggled to contain the hot hand of QB Jonathan Wesserman for Team Lowenthal, but their Offense also struggled a bit in their season opener. Danny Saslow was their Offense in Week 1 as he tallied both a rushing and passing TD. Captain Jackson was on the receiving end of Saslow’s passing TD but unfortunately for Team Goldman, it just wasn’t enough to keep pace with the defending champs. These guys now have two full years of experience under their belts and will surely be in contention all season long, even after their opening day loss. They’ll look to rebound from this performance and get back to the .500 mark in Week 2 when they take on #4 Team Fleisher (0-1).

That’s it for the Week 1 Rankings. I’ll see everyone back on the field this Saturday, September 21st!
