2019 HP Prep Flag Football – Week 5 (Oct. 12)

Updated: October 16, 2019

Week 5 has come and gone, so we are left with only one more week of regular season play before we get to the 2019 Highland Park Prep Flag Football League Postseason! Week 5 provided us with three fantastic ballgames that were all impacted heavily by mother nature. Wind gusts of up to 40 MPH made it almost impossible to throw the football on Saturday afternoon, causing our squads to rely heavily on their run and short play games. When all was said and done, #1 Team Gallender turned a two-score halftime deficit into a trilling come from behind second half victory to secure the overall #1 seed for the 2019 HP Prep Flag Postseason! While the top overall spot of the Playoff picture is settled, the race for #2-#6 is still going strong. From what we’ve seen so far through the first 5 weeks of this season, the 2019 HP Prep Flag Postseason is going to have a very intriguing dynamic. Here’s how we view things heading into the final regular season week and potential final Seeds for all 6 squads.

Power Rankings

1. Team Gallender – 5-0

Team Gallender is one victory away from completing a perfect 6-0 Regular Season record following their dramatic and intense come-from-behind 19-12 victory over #3 Team Goldman in Week 5 on Saturday afternoon. On a day when the wind was wreaking havoc on both Offenses, it was Team Gallender’s Defense that stepped up in the second half and caused multiple turnovers to snatch victory from defeat. With this huge win on Saturday afternoon, they will now enter the 2019 Postseason as the overall #1 Seed! The Leagues leader in Passing TDs and Overall TDs, Captain Josh Gallender, added two more Passing TDs to his league leading total on Saturday afternoon to help his squad secure their 5th consecutive victory. Zach Pomerantz added another Receiving TD to his league leading total (8). These guys have a high-powered Offense to go along with a very good and stingy Defense and will be extremely tough to beat in the Playoffs. Team Gallender will be the favorites to win the title after securing the overall top spot heading into the 2019 Postseason. Anyone who believes otherwise is kidding themselves. Does this mean they’ll win the title? Of course not, but to say they aren’t the favorites would be crazy. They will wrap up their regular season schedule on Saturday, October 26th when we get back from homecoming break with a match-up against #5 Team Burstyn (1-4).

2. Team Lowenthal – 4-1

Moving up from the #3 spot and into the #2 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings is Team Lowenthal following their thrilling 26-21 victory over #4 Team Fleisher on Saturday afternoon. The theme of the day was the wind. Whoever had the wind to their backs in the second half had a huge advantage over their opponents. This was the case for Team Lowenthal. Having to go into the wind the first half of this ballgame, #2 Team Lowenthal was trailing 14-6 heading into halftime following a couple of first half interceptions by QB Jonathan Wasserman. With the wind now to their backs entering the second half, #2 Team Lowenthal and QB Jonathan Wasserman turned it up a notch. Wasserman was able to connect with Cameron Sabath and Josh Mach on a couple of nice TD passes to take back the lead and the Defense put this game away with a huge Pick-6 by Captain Nate Lowenthal. This Week 5 victory guarantees that Team Lowenthal can finish no worse than the overall #3 seed. They have a huge rematch coming up in Week 6 when we return from homecoming break against #3 Team Goldman in our Week 6 Game of the Week! Winner of this game will secure the overall #2 seed and give themselves the first-round bye in the Postseason, while the loser will finish with the overall #3 seed and will have to play an extra game in the Playoffs. Huge regular season finale coming up in Week 6!

3. Team Goldman – 3-2

Team Goldman had an opportunity to all but secure the Overall #2 Seed in Week 5 but could not get anything going offensively in the second half of this ballgame. By the final score of 19-12, #3 Team Goldman falls from the overall #2 seed to the overall #3 seed and now must win their Week 6 match-up in order to secure the #2 seed heading into the 2019 postseason. Team Goldman came into their week 5 match-up with a 3-game winning streak but ended up getting shut down in the second half as they had to face some nasty wind conditions. They were rolling in the first half of this ballgame with the wind to their backs as QB Adam Glickman was able to toss two solid TD strikes to Luke Zucker and Jack to give his squad an early 12-7 lead. The second half was a completely different story as they now had to go into the wind (and face Team Gallender’s stingy Defense) and were completely shut down. With this Week 5 loss, Team Goldman sees their record sit at 3-2 with one regular season game remaining on the schedule. They have a huge rematch coming up in Week 6 when we return from homecoming break against #2 Team Lowenthal in our Week 6 Game of the Week! Winner of this game will secure the overall #2 seed and give themselves the first-round bye in the Postseason, while the loser will finish with the overall #3 seed and will have to play an extra game in the Postseason. Huge regular season finale coming up in Week 6 that will have major Playoff ramifications!

4. Team Fleisher – 1-4

If the Playoffs started today, Team Fleisher would be the #4 Overall Seed. Even after dropping their Week 5 match-up against #2 Team Lowenthal 26-21, Team Fleisher sees their overall record now sit at 1-4 and tied with two other clubs for the overall #4 spot. QB Billy Rudman was involved in all 21 points for Team Fleisher on Saturday afternoon, connecting with Captain Nate Fleisher on a nice corner fade while also rushing in two scores of his own. Unfortunately for Team Fleisher, they also had to go into the wind the second half of this ballgame and ultimately paid the price. They currently hold the tiebreaker against the other two teams tied at 1-4 as they have the best overall record against all teams tied at 1-4 (1-0). They have beaten Team Burstyn but have not yet played Team Segal. Team Fleisher had a huge opportunity to give themselves a shot at the #2 or #3 seed with a Week 5 victory, but now with this loss, they can finish no better than the #4. Team Fleisher has a very crucial game coming up in Week 6 when we return from homecoming break to conclude their regular season as they will take the field against #6 Team Segal. A win and they secure the Overall #4 seed while a loss can see them potentially fall all the way down to #6! HUGE game coming up and major Playoff implications on the line coming up in Week 6!

5. Team Burstyn – 1-4

By the final score of 26-12, #5 Team Burstyn recorded an extremely important and convincing Week 5 victory over #6 Team Segal to secure their first victory on the 2019 campaign! Captain Jesse Burstyn dominated this ballgame, accounting for all four of his teams scores. He was able to toss two solid TD strikes, one to Luke Goshen on nice bomb down the sideline (see highlight video), and another to substitute Josh Mack. Captain Jesse also used his legs in this game to combat the strong winds we were experiencing and rushed a couple of scores in to secure this huge Week 5 victory. If the Playoffs started today, Team Burstyn would be the #5 Overall Seed as they currently are losing the tiebreaker to #4 Team Fleisher (lost to them in Week 3) but hold the tiebreaker against #6 Team Segal as they have a better point differential against this squad. Team Burstyn has a very crucial game coming up in Week 6 when we return from homecoming break to conclude their regular season as they will take the field against #1 Team Gallender. A win and they can potentially finish as high as the #4 seed while a loss can see them potentially fall all the way down to #6! HUGE game coming up and major Playoff implications on the line coming up in Week 6!

6. Team Segal – 1-4

#6 Team Segal came into their Week 5 match-up against #5 Team Burstyn without their Captain and leader Rocky Segal. In came Max Lens to replace him. With the wind at their backs to start this game, Max and the rest of the Team Segal crew were on cruise control. Max accounted for both of Team Segal’s first half scores, tossing a solid TD strike and rushing in a long score to take a nice 12-7 halftime lead. But then came the second half. Battling the brutal twirling winds, the Team Segal Offense stalled, and Team Burstyn was able to utilize the wind to their advantage and score 19 unanswered points to put this ballgame away. With this Week 5 loss, Team Segal sees their regular season record drop to 1-4 and are now in a must-win position if they want to avoid being the overall #6 seed for the 2019 postseason. They currently sit tied with #4 Team Fleisher and #5 Team Burstyn at 1-4 but are losing the tiebreaker to #5 Team Burstyn based on point differential. Team Segal has a very crucial game coming up in Week 6 when we return from homecoming break to conclude their regular season as they will take the field against #4 Team Fleisher. A win and they secure at least the Overall #5 seed and could finish as high as the #4 seed. However, a loss in Week 6 will all but guarantee they finish in the #6 hole. HUGE game coming up and major Playoff implications on the line coming up in Week 6!

That’s it for the Week 5 Rankings. We’ll see everyone back on the field on Saturday, October 26th!
