Championship THURSDAY Review:

Final4: #1 Team Porter vs. #4 Team Sharrin

Team Porter came into the Final4 as the favorite following an undefeated Regular Season (7-0). It wasn’t east, but #1 Team Porter got past a plucky #4 Team Sharrin team, 77-57 on Thursday night to advance to the Championship Game. The leagues second-best defense during the regular season followed its formula for success in their Final4 victory, holding the leagues regular season scoring champion, Zach Hilgendorf to a season-low 24 points. #1 Team Porter made it tough for #4 Team Sharrin all game long, constantly putting tight, physical pressure on the ball. On the offensive side of the ball, it was the Daniel Nikitas show in this Final4 match-up. Not afraid to pull up from anywhere – at times, it looked like he might shoot from the scorer’s table – Nikitas finished with 17 points to lead #1 Team Porter and help his squad book their ticket to the Championship Game!

As for Team Sharrin – They were a popular pick to pull off an amazing upset in the Final4, based on how well they played in their Elite8 round match-up, taking down a very good #5 Team MACS crew. But it was always about whether they could shoot well enough to get past the second-best defense in the league. They unfortunately went cold at the wrong time. #1 Team Porter was able to keep the leagues regular season scoring champion, Zach Hilgendorf to a season-low 24 points and used a second half run to pull away from #4 Team Sharrin for the 77-57 victory. Team Sharrin showed a lot in their All Sports Series debut season and we hope to see them again soon. Thanks for playing!

Final4: #2 Da Bulls vs. #3 Double RIM Jobs

With #1 Team Porter waiting in the Championship – both #2 Da Bulls and #3 Double RIM Jobs were ready to lace ’em up for the right to take that final spot in the ‘ship. These two Teams met all the way back in Week 1 when #2 Da Bulls won 59-45 – in what was the worst scoring night of the Season for #3 Double RIM Jobs. Both Teams had solid regular seasons (4-3) and each had a realistic shot of winning two Games on Thursday night to take the whole thing.

#2 Da Bulls narrowly avoided being the first upset of the Fall THURSDAY hoops tournament in a hotly contested Final4. #2 Da Bulls held on to beat #3 Double RIM Jobs, 73-62. Joshua Dix scored 25 for #2 Da Bulls and Jake Bianchi added 23. This Game stayed close throughout, most of the time with #2 Da Bulls only leading by a handful or so. As the second half waged on, #2 Da Bulls just wouldn’t surrender the lead. In the closing moments, it was they who were able to shift into a higher gear and they would take it by 11 points. #2 Da Bulls was moving on to play against #1 Team Porter for the Crown.

For #3 Double RIM Jobs – They kept this game tight throughout, with no team leading by more than 13 at any point. Drew Sandberg and Connor Quicksell led #3 Double RIM Jobs with 15 and 14, respectively. #3 Double RIM Jobs threatened to be the first team to record an upset in the Fall THURSDAY Hoops tournament but fell just short by a final score of 73-62. This group is as high-quality as it gets, and while they are still searching for their first All Sports Series Hoops crown, they have certainly made themselves known on the All Sports Series Hoops scene. We hope to see these guys again soon and thanks for playing!

CHAMPIONSHIP: #1 Team Porter vs. #2 Da Bulls

These two Championship-combatants met in Week 5 – and #1 Team Porter dealt #2 Da Bulls their worst Loss of the Season, 91-54. It was the night that Team Porter pretty much wrapped up the #1 seed. #2 Da Bulls had certainly been counting down the days to get some revenge. Both Teams were going to be tired from playing their semi-final previously in the night, so depth was going to be as important as ever in this one. Differing opinions exist on whether it is better to play two games back to back (like Da Bulls) or have an hour break (like Team Porter).

A suffocating defensive performance lifted #1 Team Porter past #2 Da Bulls, 81-60, in the final game of the All Sports Series Fall THURSDAY Hoops season! #1 Team Porter were quicker and more energetic than #2 Da Bulls, who looked to be one step slower than their opponents following their tough Final4 victory the game before. Luke McDermott had 19 and Reed Hunnicutt scored 15 for #1 Team Porter. This one was not the best Game for #2 Da Bulls and #1 Team Porter did not waste taking advantage of it. Joshua Dix led all scorers in this Championship Game with 27 points for #2 Da Bulls while Jake Bianchi added 15 points of his own. Unfortunately for #2 Da Bulls, they just could not find enough offensive production from anyone else in this contest. Into the second half it was clear – #1 Team Porter would win the Crown! More on the Champs momentarily…

For #2 Da Bulls – yes, it is a disappointing end to the season, as their lasting memory will be their second worst performance of the year. However, you need to look at the bigger picture. They made it to the Championship and were the #2 overall seed. That is a nice debut as a unit in All Sports Series. Most Teams would kill for that type of production in year 1. We hope to see them back here soon, thanks for playing!

Now to the Champs – #1 Team Porter! It is their first All Sports Series Fall Hoops Championship! They were the best Team all season long and put an exclamation point on it, with the 20+ point Championship victory. These guys have the talent and depth to go on a serious run right now and start shaping what could be the next Chicago Hoops League dynasty…Thanks for playing!

That’s it for the Fall Season. Hope to see you all back out there this Winter! Thanks again for playing!
